The Asia Foundation Names New Country Representative for Nepal

San Francisco and Kathmandu, August 29, 2018 — The Asia Foundation announces the appointment of Meghan W.T. Nalbo as country representative in Nepal as of September 2018. As the senior-most Asia Foundation employee in Nepal, she will oversee a range of programs and projects on strengthening subnational governance, mitigating conflict, empowering women, expanding economic opportunity, increasing environmental resilience, and promoting regional cooperation.

Nalbo brings over a decade of experience in governance and development in Asia, much of which was focused specifically on Nepal’s political transition. Prior to joining The Asia Foundation, she served as a foreign service officer with USAID. Her work with USAID spanned over nine years, most recently as director of the Democracy and Governance Office at USAID Nepal. She also served as USAID’s Asia regional coordinator for the Global, Regional Policy Team, where for two years she was the technical lead at the Center for Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance in Washington D.C. and program officer in Bangladesh.

During her tenure at USAID, Meghan Nalbo supported the agency’s evolving work on examining cross-sectoral development programming, thinking and working politically programmatic implementation, and building partnerships with academic institutions to advance more rigorous development learning and data utilization. In addition to her work at USAID, she has also worked with the UN Development Programme, University of Leeds Law School, and the International Center for Transitional Justice.

Nalbo was a Fulbright Fellow in Nepal in 2003-2004, where her research focused on indigenous political and cultural identities and rights with the backdrop of Nepal’s ten-year civil conflict. She has a master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, where she specialized in human rights and South Asia and a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from Bowdoin College in Maine, completing a year-long cultural immersion program in Nepal through Pitzer College.

The Asia Foundation is a nonprofit international development organization committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Asia. Informed by six decades of experience and deep local expertise, our programs address critical issues affecting Asia in the 21st century—governance and law, economic development, women’s empowerment, environment, and regional cooperation.
