Call for Applications: Art Director

The Asia Foundation’s Let’s Read initiative is looking for a suitable candidate for the role of art director for the creation of 10 children’s picture books. The art director will be responsible for providing technical support during a book creation workshop from November 21 to December 6, 2024 Following the workshop, they will then oversee, and support authors and illustrators bring to life an imaginative, engaging, early-grade children’s storybook, overseen by editors and children’s book experts.  

The resulting books must resonate with young readers and reflect the theme of cultural preservation, religious freedom and tolerance in the Pacific Islands.  

Let’s Read is an initiative of The Asia Foundation that seeks to foster a love of books and reading among people of Asia and the Pacific by providing access to a digital library of free children’s books. The library is accessible on the website and is available on the Apple and Android app stores. Find out more on the Let’s Read website.    

The Asia Foundation’s Let’s Read platform offers over 10,000 culturally rich and diverse children’s story books in over 60 languages. The program has developed 36 books from the Pacific Islands, showcasing a unique library that reflects local traditions, values, and languages. 

Assignment Objective

To manage and direct the artistic and design elements of the Let’s Read books, ensuring alignment with the program’s vision and project theme while facilitating the collaboration of regional artists and authors. 

Scope of Work 

  • Oversee the development of 10 high quality children’s picture books, 
  • Develop the visual concept and style for books, ensuring cohesion between illustrations and text, 
  • Work closely with illustrators and writers to bring stories to life through compelling visuals, 
  • Lead and manage the project workflow, ensuring timely delivery of artistic assets, 
  • Collaborate with regional artists, ensuring that the cultural and artistic integrity of local stories are respected and enhanced, 
  • Provide creative direction, feedback, and final approval on all visual materials. 

Deliverables 

  • Participate and facilitate discussions during the book creation workshop. 
  • Visual concept and style guide for book projects. 
  • Management of artistic production, from initial sketches to final illustrations. 
  • Final visual assets ready for upload to the Let’s Read platform. 
  • Provide oversight for the print ready, final layout design for each book 

Required Qualifications 

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in art direction, with a strong portfolio demonstrating creative leadership in children’s literature or digital platforms. 
  • Artistic background with the ability to provide creative direction. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with regional artists, particularly in a project management role. 

Selection Criteria 

  • A portfolio that showcases artistic projects, especially in children’s book illustration or digital storytelling. 
  • Experience managing creative teams and working in multicultural settings, particularly in the Pacific region.
