The government of Myanmar has recognized the importance of private sector development, yet many enterprises across the country continue to face a challenging business environment. The Myanmar Business Environment Index 2019 report, funded by UK Aid through the DAI-implemented DaNa Facility, focuses on identifying the constraints affecting Myanmar’s many domestically-owned small and medium-sized enterprises. The Index serves as a first step in providing the country’s Union and state/region governments with the necessary evidence base to pursue a variety of decentralized economic governance reforms.

Dr. Kim N. B. Ninh, Asia Foundation senior advisor and former country representative (2013-2018) in Myanmar, and Edmund Malesky, professor of Political Science at Duke University and lead researcher and lead author of The Myanmar Business Environment Index 2019, will share key findings from the report, which reflects the views of private enterprises across Myanmar and measures localities against ten components of good economic governance. With its useful insights and analysis, the Index is a unique tool providing data for use by the government of Myanmar as well as other stakeholders seeking to further improve the country’s business environment.
