SUMMARY:Local Solutions to Judicial Reform and Access to Justice
DESCRIPTION:While many countries in Asia and the Pacific bear the hallmark features of societies committed to the rule of law\, the reality is often very different due to a variety of constraints\, such as inefficient judicial administration\, limited professional capacity\, lack of political will\, and a combination of social and cultural norms that compromise the access and justice experience of vulnerable populations. These challenges impede equitable\, inclusive\, and sustainable development. \nFor decades\, The Asia Foundation has been deeply engaged in law and justice system development\, with a particular focus on judicial administration\, access to justice\, community policing\, law reform\, legal education and professional development\, and the enhancement of traditional alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. In partnership with the courts\, ministries of justice\, the police\, law schools\, community legal service providers\, and other civil society organizations\, The Asia Foundation has pursued a conscious balance between formal and informal justice system support\, recognizing that both components are essential to inclusive access to justice and advancement of the rule of law. \nPlease join us for a panel discussion highlighting of our program experience and learning in multiple countries and subregions\, including community mediation in Nepal\, judicial reform in Indonesia\, and Supreme Court reform in the Philippines. \nRegister \nFeaturing\nErasmus Napitupulu\nExecutive Director of the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR)\, Indonesia \nHon. Justice Maria Filomena D. Singh\nAssociate Justice\, The Supreme Court of the Philippines \nHon.
