In September 2019, The Asia Foundation launched its regional Let’s Read initiative in Myanmar where only four percent of the nation’s 53 million children have books at home. To overcome book scarcity across Asia, Let’s Read brings together the talent of local partners and the power of technology to build the skills of local authors, illustrators, translators and publishers to produce high quality books in local languages. Today, families, librarians, and educators are enjoying over 200 Let’s Read Myanmar titles emphasizing diversity, inclusion, and expanded gender roles including Girl Power in Myanmar!

Girl Power in Myanmar tells the stories of 14 extraordinary Myanmar women breaking rules and making change. Myanmar has a rich history of women who refused to play by the rules. Journalists who kept writing, artists who kept painting and female soldiers who kept serving their country even when they were attacked, bullied and told to go home.

Please join us for an inspiring discussion with the author of Girl Power in Myanmar, Alyson Curro, and Melody Zavala, The Asia Foundation’s senior director of Books for Asia, to discuss the transformative power of storytelling in Myanmar. This event is generously co-hosted with Christie’s and the Henry Luce Foundation.
