On the Philippines island of Mindanao, decades of violent conflict have shattered lives across all communities, but women especially suffered. Braving overwhelming risk, a remarkable group of women brought people together across ethnic and religious lines to advocate for lasting peace and amplified the voices of women at the highest levels of peace negotiations. The Bangsamoro Women’s Movement helped shape the eventual peace agreement by ensuring respect for the rights and interests of women. With the establishment of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, the movement strengthened the fledgling autonomous government, raised collective voices, and facilitated greater social cohesion and trust. The Asia Foundation has proudly supported the Bangsamoro Women at every step. Tonight, we honor their brave and tireless efforts to build a better future for Mindanao.

Visa demonstrates its commitment to women’s economic empowerment through initiatives that feature skills training, mentoring, capital, and networks across Asia. Alongside The Asia Foundation, we have worked to support women-led businesses and women entrepreneurs with digital and financial skills development along with a technology upskilling initiative. Our collective efforts place us on track to reach more than 35,000 micro and small business owners and women job seekers across the region with essential training and tools.
