New Report Reveals Trends and Implications of Conflict in Asia  

In response to critical gaps in existing conflict data, The Asia Foundation’s new report, “The State of Conflict and Violence in Asia,” presents a concise, evidence-based overview of violence in 14 Asian countries, including some of the most complex places in the world. Drawing on the Foundation’s own long-standing experience in each country, the volume reports historical patterns and emerging trends in conflict and violence, combining analysis of published materials with in-depth knowledge and nuanced understanding of local politics and power.

On October 12 in Washington, D.C., The Asia Foundation will hold a public launch of the report, featuring co-authors Patrick Barron and Sana Jaffrey, and moderated by Ellen Laipson, Trustee Emerita and director of the International Security program at George Mason University. The speakers will discuss the volume’s country reports and five thematic, expert essays—focusing on inter-communal violence, gender-based violence, land and natural resource conflicts, cross-border insurgency and terrorism, and the links between conflict and regime type—and draw out broader findings and implications. In addition, on October 17, the Foundation will hold a half-day conference in D.C. to introduce two significant new reports on Myanmar: The first examines executive policy-making, including the policy-making process historically in Myanmar, and how the NLD government is reshaping policy-making structures and processes to support its reform vision. The second report focuses on the national peace process and builds upon the Foundation’s seminal regional study, “The Contested Corners of Asia,” to examine the role international development assistance can play in supporting or hindering a transition to peace in Myanmar’s subnational conflict areas. The Asia Foundation will convene two panel discussions, on peace and policy-making, to present its new findings in these areas central to the future of governance in Myanmar.
