South Asia Women Parliamentarians Take Lead

In July 2012 the South Asia Women Parliamentarians Conference in Dhaka, Bangladesh, attracted 130 MPs from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and elsewhere. Women gathered with a goal of creating a strong network and promoting a more effective role for women leaders in national governance across South Asia. The Asia Foundation and USAID in Bangladesh organized the conference and have partnered on a 5-year program, Promoting Democratic Institutions and Practices, including an emphasis on increasing women’s participation in parliament.
