The Merali Scholarship Program: Reducing Poverty One Girl at a Time
For more than 60 years, The Asia Foundation has been committed to improving access to education for women and girls across Asia. Since 2010, we have partnered with The Merali Foundation to provide young women from low-income backgrounds with scholarships to pursue university degrees primarily in the hard and social sciences and technology—fields where women are overwhelmingly underrepresented. Since the program began, it has grown to support more than 600 young women in five countries: Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The Asia Foundation is grateful to The Merali Foundation and its late founder, Mr. Pandju Merali, for providing women in Asia the chance to gain a higher education and reach their potential, opening up opportunities for them to improve their lives and that of their families and communities.
