The Asia Foundation Hosts Panel on Disaster Waste at the 2018 Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction
The Asia Foundation recently participated in the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. On July 3rd, the Government of Mongolia opened the three-day conference which was attended by over 3,000 participants including over 50 countries and 1,500 organizations. The conference, held every two years, is an organized collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. This regional summit first began in 2005 after the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. The objective of the conference is to address and manage disaster risks in a region that is greatly impacted by natural disasters.
Deputy Prime Minister Enkhtuvshin Ulziisaikhan, who opened the conference, called on the participants to focus on disaster-resilient infrastructure in national plans in order to better implement a global plan for reducing disaster loss.
In conjunction with the conference The Asia Foundation, in partnership with The Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia and the United Nations Environment Program’s International Environmental Technology Centre, hosted a panel focusing on disaster waste: “Enhancing Resilience through Disaster Waste Management and Building Back Better.” The panel presented experiences from the past, lessons learned and ideas in preparing for future disasters. The speakers included Satoru Mimura a disaster waste expert from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and The Asia Foundation’s Director of Environment Programs Kim J. DeRidder.
The Asia Foundation supports cross-country and regional dialogues throughout Asia to enable government and non-governmental leaders to share lessons and best practices relate to governance and common developmental issues.
