The Asia Foundation Supports and Participates in Advancing South-South Learning in Asia Conference
On July 4th, The Asia Foundation collaborated with the Asian Development Bank and Korea Development Institute to organize an international conference “Advancing South-South Learning in Asia.” The purpose of the conference was to discuss Asia’s vital role in improving links across the global south in trade, finance, and technology. The conference continues The Asia Foundation’s efforts to foster knowledge exchange on South-South cooperation and Asian approaches to development cooperation.
“New patterns of economic partnership and development cooperation among southern countries have emerged,” said Mr. Youngjae Lim, a Senior Fellow at the Korea Development Institute. “Cooperation based on mutually beneficial trade, aid, diplomacy, or strategic partnerships between and among countries at similar stages of development exist, and Asia has become both a generator of development resources and an incubator for new ideas and practices.”
Senior Vice President of Programs Gordon Hein highlighted The Foundation’s decades of experience with triangular cooperation on the panel “Boosting South-South Knowledge Exchange,” and Director of International Development Cooperation Anthea Mulakala organized and moderated the panel “Evaluating South-South Cooperation: Experience, Challenges and Lessons,” featuring speakers from prominent Asian institutions including China’s Development Research Centre, the BRICS Policy Centre, ADB, and 3ie. The Foundation also organized a knowledge marketplace event on “Asian NGO’s in South-South Cooperation: Current Opportunities and Challenges.” The interactive session launched The Asia Foundation and the Korea Development Institute’s joint publication Partners in Asian Development Cooperation: the Role of NGOs and the Private Sector.
The Asia Foundation supports cross-country and regional dialogues throughout Asia to enable government and non-governmental leaders to share lessons and best practices related to governance and common developmental issues.
