Virtual Event – Children of War: A Rapid Needs Assessment of Orphans in Muslim Mindanao U.S. Launch

On July 30, 2020 the Asia Foundation launched the report Children of War: A Rapid Needs Assessment of Orphans in Muslim Mindanao, which summarizes findings from a rapid assessment of the status of orphans who have lost at least one parent from the wars in Mindanao from 2009 to 2019. Minister Raissa Jajurie of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Ministry of Social Services and Development opened the event discussing her strong commitment to child protection, the existing gap in data, and the need for informed policy interventions. Lead Researcher Ica Fernandez presented findings from the report including the effects of being orphaned, specifically for women and girls; challenges related to access to justice; and the vulnerability of orphans to recruitment. Fernandez outlined recommended interventions including policy measures at multiple levels/scales. ZamBaSulTa Lead Researcher Hadzer Birowa joined the panel for a vibrant discussion on the current situation and a path forward in BARMM. Download the slide deck or the transcript.
