The Asia Foundation Malaysia Calls for Social Inclusion in Sabah’s Blue Economy Development

Program Year: 2023

On December 14, the government of Sabah in Malaysia hosted the Sabah State Blue Economy Conference, gathering stakeholders from the government, civil society, and nonprofit organizations to share perspectives on the “blue economy” – a sustainable exploration of marine and coastal resources to provide livelihood and economic opportunities to communities.

The Asia Foundation’s Country Representative in Malaysia, Robin Bush, participated in the panel “Blue Economy: A Vision for Sustainable Development and Social Inclusivity” and highlighted the importance of social inclusion in the Blue Economy in Sabah.

Drawing lessons from the Foundation’s work with the Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative, the team supports Sabah Maju Jaya’s Blue Economy Development plans as part of the Australia-Malaysia Reform Policy program.

At the event, Robin Bush presented a memento to Datuk Rusmadi Datu Sulai, the chief coordinating officer of the Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat.

The conference is co-organized by The Asia Foundation and Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat under the Sabah Chief Minister’s office.
