Peace and Stability

About this Program

Progress toward peace and stability across Asia and the Pacific is threatened by long-standing tensions and emerging risks. Through policy research, capacity support, and local initiatives, The Asia Foundation responds to violence and entrenched conflicts as well as new challenges that threaten to undermine decades of progress including geopolitical instability, accelerating environmental change, and transnational crime. Ongoing programs strengthen peacebuilding efforts and transitional institutions, support responsive subnational governance, improve justice and services where the state has limited reach or legitimacy, amplify local voices, engage policymakers on mitigating conflict, and improve the safety of online spaces.

Program Outcomes

  • Increased attention to environment and climate change in national and local development strategies
  • Greater public and private investment in clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, and green growth
  • Increased cross-sectoral cooperation in natural resource management, disaster risk reduction, and environmental conflict mitigation

How We Work

XCEPT

In Asia, the Middle East and Africa, conflict and instability endure in contested border regions where local tensions connect with regional and global dynamics. The Asia Foundation, the Rift Valley Institute and the Carnegie Middle East Center are working together to better understand the causes and impacts of conflict in these border areas and their international dimensions, support more effective policymaking and development programming, and build the capacity of their local partners to leverage research to advocate for peaceful change.

The Asia Foundation is part of the effort to better understand subnational conflict.
