Sustainable Finance Tutorial: Environmental & Social Considerations

This tutorial offers a practical guide to integrating environmental and social considerations into infrastructure project development and financing in the Mekong subregion. Aimed at stakeholders with varying levels of expertise, it highlights key environmental risks—biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change—and social risks—land acquisition, labor conditions, and community health and safety. It explains how these can affect a project’s success. The tutorial shows that addressing E&S issues early in the project lifecycle can reduce financial, operational, and reputational risks, including cost overruns and community resistance. Through case studies and a review of international standards, the tutorial provides practical insights into navigating the complex requirements of sustainable finance to ensure long-term project viability. By illustrating the link between E&S performance and long-term project viability, the guide encourages moving beyond compliance toward proactive risk management.
