Cambodia’s National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations and The Asia Foundation Sign MOU

Phnom Penh, July 2, 2020 — The National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations (NIDIR) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Cambodia, and The Asia Foundation will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Collaboration and Capacity Building on Diplomacy and International Relations under the presidency of H.E. Prak Sokhonn, deputy prime minister and minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on July 2, 2020 at NIDIR. The objective of this MOU is to strengthen, promote, and develop cooperation in the areas of international relations and diplomacy; supporting the Royal Government of Cambodia’s efforts to foster relations between the Kingdom of Cambodia and international communities.

Over the next three years, NIDIR and the Foundation will work together supporting the Ministry’s young officials’ participation in the Young Asian Diplomats Program in the United States of America, and organizing exchange programs and exposure visits with fellow participants from the program. The Young Asian Diplomats Program supports the leadership skill development of the next generation of Asians at the forefront of effecting change in Asia and enhances the long-term prospects for multilateral cooperation in resolving problems in the region.

The collaboration will also establish an open public library and support NIDIR to develop this library into a specialized international relations resource for Cambodia, conduct a joint public lecture series, engage and support policy research and developments on International Relations and capacity development, and organize workshops and relevant conferences. NIDIR and the Foundation hope that this MOU will allow both institutions to contribute to the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to promote international relations with foreign nations.

Prior to this MOU, the Ministry and the Foundation have had a long-standing relationship. Since 1993, the Ministry and the Foundation have worked together to provide support to the Ministry’s officials through exchange programs, capacity building, and trainings.

The National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations was officially established in 2016 under the umbrella of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. NIDIR aims to build professionalism of Cambodian career diplomats through capacity development so as to enable them to cope with the increasingly challenging world of diplomatic affairs and particularly to enhance Cambodia’s involvement and role in regional affairs.
