The Asia Foundation Celebrates Major Velena Iga’s International Women of Courage Award

The Asia Foundation congratulates Major Velena Iga of Papua New Guinea on receiving the 2025 International Women of Courage Award from the U.S. Department of State. Major Iga was recognized for her transformative decade-long work combating human trafficking, modern slavery, sorcery accusation-related violence, and violence against women in Papua New Guinea. Her efforts have created systemic changes throughout the country and provided critical protection for the most vulnerable populations.

We are honored to partner to Major Iga in raising awareness and providing protection services for trafficking victims across Papua New Guinea.
