The Asia Foundation announces the selection of Thuy Tran, a specialist in contemporary art and community-based engagement, as a 2020 Margaret F. Williams Memorial Fellow. She is an alum of Georgetown University and has received several grants and fellowships for her work focused on social justice, equity, and community dialogue including the Ebony McKinney Arts Leadership Award and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Public Imagination Fellowship.

Tran will spend six months working virtually with Abby Chen, head of Contemporary Art at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco to assist with exhibition and program development for a wide variety of audiences that reflect and build on the museum’s mission, exhibitions, and contemporary art collection. Her focus will be on researching and developing programs that explore interdisciplinary connections, identify trends in contemporary culture, and embrace diverse viewpoints to create dynamic fora for exploring artistic practice, ideas, and the museum’s collection and exhibitions. She will coordinate events highlighting overlap in themes showcased at the Asian Art Museum and the work of Asia Foundation programs.

Established by the late Asia Foundation President Emeritus Ambassador Haydn Williams, the Margaret F. Williams Memorial Fellowship in Asian Art Program honors his late wife, whose interest in Asian art was inspired by their travels together on Asia Foundation visits to the region. Margaret Williams was also a founding docent at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the cooperating partner in implementing the fellowship program.
